Ten years later, he's still trying to get on the bandwagon with the help of a book tour, a caravan, a computer programmer's assistant (Amy Ryan), and a Jewish friend (Jemaine Clement) who lives in the Holy Land. But the pastor of the church (Danny McBride) and his wife (Leslie Bibb), who are fighting over "flock members" with a Reformed Satanist (Will Forte) across the street, decide to fund Don's new expeditions and digs on the condition that he bring his discoveries to the church and publicize them.

I can only speak for myself

The film thus satirizes Christians. As you can imagine, the ice is thin. When the film was released in theaters, I too was curious to see if it would be funny and totally interesting or just annoying and deliberately demeaning. It turned out to be neither. Hess knows their Christian stereotypes and caricatures them to such an extent that it takes you out of reality and pulls you into the parallel world of the film, but gets nothing out of you

Although the overall tone of the film is light and calm, it also raises more serious questions. While the obvious villain is a Satanist (presumably unreformed), the other pastor, Tony Lazarus, and his wife Joylinda, are more interested in the greatness, fame, and money of their church than they are in teaching, sharing their faith, and encouraging others.

The right place and his faith are sincere

They call Don and believe that if he illegally brings biblical relics, he will prove the Bible true to the people and they will be saved. His friend Boaz pressures him and continues to blackmail him, all for personal gain. Don's crimes become more and more serious, but it is always clear that his heart is in the right place and his faith is sincere. His assistant, Kerol, is also the moral compass of the film.

Christian message at the end of the film

So people will take away a good fight from the film, but the Christian faith itself is treated with respect and we are all cleverly surprised by the Christian message at the end of the film. It's not a gospel message, but it's no less true and fits the film like a glove. Sam Rockwell doesn't get a chance to be his usual goofy and witty self, but his more subtle and restrained character is still excellent.

His street was full of some lunatics

I liked Don's journey where he tries to figure out how to bring people to Christ, but only succeeds at the end of the film when he can do some good. The ending was pretty predictable, but the road to it was filled with some of the craziest and most unexpected things that can happen in a movie. Well, it's a Hess film, so it was pretty standard. Aside from the big Indiana Jones reference, most of the humor goes over the heads of people who don't know the culture these characters come from, and there are very few really good jokes.

I spent more time being amused and a little embarrassed by the silence on the screen than laughing out loud, but when the jokes did come, they were funny, and the amount of laughter they elicited made up for the duller and just plain weird parts in between.
